This course meets or exceeds the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) professional qualifications standard 1031 for Inspector I certification.
The course topics Include:
- Indiana State Laws (IC): including the role of the Indiana legislature in the adoption of model codes and standards and enforcement of those codes within Indiana.
- Administrative Codes (IAC): pertaining to the adoption of model codes and standards.
- Indiana Fire and Building Safety Commission: Adoption of model codes to be enforced within the State of Indiana and review of variances related to life safety and fire related matters of adopted codes and amendments.
- Code adoption process: Proposals and comments of and on proposals during the review and adoption process.
- Indiana Department of Homeland Security: Organizational structure.
- (AHJ) Authority Having Jurisdiction: Political subdivision
- Using the Indiana Fire Code
- Using the Indiana Building Code Indiana General Administrative Rules
Students are responsible for having access to:
- edition of the Indiana Building Code
- edition of the Indiana Fire Code
- edition of the IFSTA Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement Textbook
- A laptop computer for the Indiana State Certification Examination
A minimum of 10 students are required to hold the course.
About the instructor:
Rodney Johnson has worked in Code Enforcement for 40 years.
He served as Division Chief of Code Enforcement and Investigations at Greenwood Fire Department for 30 years.
Currently he serves as the Loss Control Manager at Indiana University at Indianapolis (IUI). At IUI he works on a variety of projects including new construction, remodels, fire and life safety systems, research buildings and lab design and inspection, numerous hazardous materials inspections with IU – EHS(Environmental Health and Safety). IU Architects and Engineers and outside project design forms and contractors.
