IFD’s Doug Abernathy gives key note remarks Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, during the annual Reading of the Names held at the Indianapolis Firefighters Museum along Mass Avenue in Indianapolis. The event, hosted by the Indianapolis Professional Firefighters Union Local 416, remembers firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs who died in the line of duty.

Douglas Abernathy

Battalion Chief of Wellness and Support, Indianapolis Fire Department (Ret.)

Chief Douglas Abernathy served the Indianapolis Fire Department with courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication for 38 years. Over the course of his distinguished career, he held several critical leadership roles, including Training Chief and Chief of Wellness and Support, where he oversaw Health and Safety initiatives and helped develop and strengthen the department’s Peer Support programs.

Chief Abernathy was widely known throughout the department as the “Chief of Hugs.” That nickname reflected his genuine care for firefighters and their families, always making time to check in, support, and uplift those around him—especially during the most difficult moments of the job.

But if you asked Chief Abernathy how he defined himself, he would put the fire service in its proper place. In his own words:

“First, I’m a man of God. I am a husband. I am a father. I am a son, and I am a brother. Then, somewhere down the line, the fire department comes in.”

Those words capture the heart of who he is. His faith and his family have always been his foundation. Yet it was those very values—his faith, humility, compassion, and strength of character—that allowed him to serve the Indianapolis Fire Department with such excellence.

Through his leadership in training, health and safety, and firefighter wellness, Chief Abernathy helped shape generations of firefighters. His commitment to taking care of the whole firefighter—physically, mentally, and spiritually—left a lasting mark on the department.

His God-given abilities, combined with his servant’s heart, helped make him not only an outstanding chief, but one of the most respected firefighters in the history of the Indianapolis Fire Department.

FIAI 2026 Keynote Speaker

On February 5, 1992, the Indianapolis Fire Department experienced one of the most tragic days in its history. During the fire at the Indianapolis Athletic Club, we lost two firefighters in the line of duty. That fire changed lives—including mine. It was more than just another incident on the run sheet. The loss of those firefighters shook the entire department to its core. It forced us to look inward and confront the realities of the job in ways we never had before. For many of us, that tragedy became a turning point. It changed the way we thought about safety, health, and the long-term well-being of firefighters. Out of that loss came a new direction for the Indianapolis Fire Department—one that placed a greater emphasis on firefighter wellness, survival, and taking care of our own. What began as a moment of unimaginable loss ultimately pushed the department toward progress. Policies changed. Conversations changed. The culture began to evolve. Behind the loss of those firefighters, the Indianapolis Fire Department found a renewed commitment to protecting not only the citizens we serve, but also the firefighters who answer the call.
